In-store: Troubleshoot QR code scanning problems

  1. Hold your device over a QR Code so that it’s clearly visible within your smartphone’s screen.
  2. The QR code should not take more than 50% of the screen.
  3. Hold the device steady.
  4. For best results, aim your device squarely at the code, and not at an angle.
  5. Try to minimize any glare from stray light sources, and scan the code in an evenly lit environment.
  6. If the code is in direct sunlight, you may need to cover it with your hand for the app to read it properly.
  7. If you’re holding your phone too close or too far away, it won’t scan the code. Try holding your phone about 30 cm away and slowly moving it towards the QR code.
    1. Rule of the thumb: the ratio between scanning distance and the QR Code size is 10:1.
    2. So if you want to scan a QR Code that is 10 square centimetres it has to be scanned from a distance of 100 centimetres.
  8. The phone’s lens can pick up a lot of dust and smudges that can affect image clarity. Wipe it with a soft cloth to clean it off.
